Concept of Ka Hoe Uli

Based on the ʻōlelo noʻeau (Hawaiian proverb) of “ʻO ke alelo ka hoe uli o ka ʻōlelo a ka waha–The tongue is the steering paddle of the words uttered by the mouth” (#2449), we believe that the designs and messaging that we choose to wear and express via our clothing is the steering paddle of our lawena (behavior). In other words, our ʻōlelo provides us with a code of conduct. The is the foundation of the Ka Hoe Uli brand.

Almost every item in our line is branded with a hae Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian flag) to remind us of the political history of our language, our brand logo of two crossed hoe uli (steering paddles used on traditional Hawaiian waʻa kaulua or double-hulled voyaging canoes like Hōkūleʻa), along with a culturally appropriate Hawaiian language design.
We hope you choose to support our brand. When you do, wear it like armor.

P.S. This brand has been in the making for a long time starting as Designs ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, which was the online store of the iSpeak Hawaiian podcast back in 2007. If you were a supporter of the online store and/or the podcast, we hope to have your continued support with Ka Hoe Uli.
